What Is a Friction Feeder? (And How It Works)
A plain-language explainer on friction feeders — how they singulate cards and sheets, what they can feed, and when to choose friction over vacuum.
What is a friction feeder
A friction feeder is an automatic device that pulls one sheet at a time from the top of a stack and delivers it downstream into a packaging, printing, or collation line. In the card and packaging world it is most often called a card feeder. It replaces manual placement, raising speed and removing human error.
How a friction feeder works
A rotating belt or wheel contacts the bottom of the top sheet with higher friction than the sheet beneath it. The speed difference drags the top sheet forward while a separator or air knife prevents the second sheet from following. A servo motor controls belt speed and a PLC stores recipes per job.
Key components
- Friction belt or wheel — the contact surface that pulls the sheet
- Separator / air knife — stops the second sheet from double-feeding
- Servo motor + PLC + HMI — speed control and recipe storage
- Photoelectric sensors — missing-card, double-feed and position detection
- Outfeed conveyor — hands the sheet to the next machine
What materials can it feed
Friction feeders handle porous, stable substrates from about 0.1 mm to 3 mm: CR80 cards, game cards, gift cards, ID cards, leaflets, instruction sheets, coupons, and labels. Coated or very slick stock may need vacuum assistance.
Friction vs suction: when to choose
Choose friction when the product is rigid, porous, and not scratch-sensitive, and you need the highest speed at the lowest cost. Choose a vacuum (suction) feeder when the product is non-porous, delicate, laminated, or foil — anything friction would fail to grip or would mark.
Typical applications
Friction feeders are used for trading-card and game-card collation, gift-card and loyalty-card insertion, manual/leaflet feeding into cartons, and coupon or label placement on flow wrappers and labeling lines.
How to size a friction feeder
Match the feeder's rated speed to your bottleneck, not your average. If your wrapper runs 200 packs/min, size the feeder above that. Also confirm the card-size range, changeover time, and detection features before you buy.
